Emotional RegulationWeek 5Sometimes it’s helpful to STOPP before we act on our impulses; it helps us to think before we act, and can help us to avoid exasperating a difficult situation.
Stop#
- Stop what you’re doing
- Don’t make excuses - just stop
- I don’t care how stressed you are, just stop
Take a deep breath#
- Notice your breath mindfully
- Use a breathing technique
Observe#
- What is going on?
- How do you feel?
- How are you behaving?
- How are others behaving?
- What thoughts are coming to you?
- Try a mindfulness exercise
Perspective#
- Try to see it from a helicopter’s view
- Try to see the situation from the outside
- Is there another way to look at this situation?
- What advice would you give to someone else right now?
Proceed mindfully#
- What would be helpful right now?
- Use some grounding exercises
- Is it a wise way to move forward?
- Still not sure what to do? Try to problem solve what to do next!
