Sometimes it’s helpful to STOPP before we act on our impulses; it helps us to think before we act, and can help us to avoid exasperating a difficult situation.

Stop#

  • Stop what you’re doing
  • Don’t make excuses - just stop
  • I don’t care how stressed you are, just stop

Take a deep breath#

Observe#

  • What is going on?
  • How do you feel?
  • How are you behaving?
  • How are others behaving?
  • What thoughts are coming to you?
  • Try a mindfulness exercise

Perspective#

  • Try to see it from a helicopter’s view
  • Try to see the situation from the outside
  • Is there another way to look at this situation?
  • What advice would you give to someone else right now?
