- Worry & doubt
Remember: It takes two people to maintain a relationship.
Dialectics#
Dialectics refer to the idea of a dialogue between two (or more) people holding different points of view. This concept is important to maintaining consistent & healthy relationships with those around you. It teaches us that:
- There’s always more than one way to see a situation, and more than one way to solve a problem.
- Everyone has unique qualities & points of view.
- Change is the only constant.
- Honour the truth on both sides. Avoid seeing a situation in black & white, all or nothing.
How to Walk the Middle Path#
- Practise all sides of a situation & give yourself space to evaluate it.
- Check your assumptions; always ask questions if you’re uncertain about something.
- Use descriptive words to explain thoughts & feelings.
An important note: Sometimes people have opinions that are inherently harmful, based in feelings rather than facts. This can be in any situation, whether it be a relationship breakdown, family disagreements or even political discourse.
Their harmful opinion does not justify their harmful actions.
In situations like this, ensure that you always:
- Evaluate safety; is it safe to advocate for yourself here? Or is it safer to leave this situation as soon as possible.
- Only if it’s safe to do so, advocate for yourself. Stand for what you believe in.
- Only if it’s safe to do so, make space for yourself & your opinion, even when others disagree.
- If you ever feel unsafe, always prioritise leaving the situation immediately.
